The Performing Arts Studio @ The Link
Theatre Street is now based primarily at The Link, a new community hub for young people that has been created by local community development charity Trust Thamesmead with the aid of a £5m grant from the governments myplace scheme.
This development will become a dedicated arena for activities for young people and the wider community. One of these arches will be a purpose built, state-of-the-art Performing Arts Studio and performance space operating under the stewardship of Theatre Street Performing Arts Ltd, a not-for-profit social enterprise company, the development of Theatre Street School of Performing Arts that has operated in the area for the past ten years (we celebrated 10 years in November 2011!).
The expansion of what TSPA is able to provide to the young people of the area will involve changing from what it currently delivers as a community theatre & dance school - operating out of a village hall, a school, a church hall and the local gym centre - to running a thriving Arts Centre that aims to become the creative hub of the local community, ultimately to become synonymous with creative and performing arts in Thamesmead and the local area.
The Studio consists of a 160-seat performance space and studio that can also be divided into two rehearsal studios where our classes will run, fully equipped with mirrors and dance floor. We are thrilled to now be able to provide our classes in a space that matches our high standards. We will continue to provide weekly classes and Saturday Stage School and will be greatly expanding our offer to young people, including a new weekly drama group for age 11-17 and expanding our music services. On-site there is also a recording studio and editing suite which we intend to utilise whenever we can. Bexleyheath Stage School will continue to run at Belmont School, but our students there will have the benefit of the new Studio for performances and so on.
Although delayed by over a year with slow building works, the time of opening is here: The opportunities we will be able to provide our children, old and new, will be greatly increased by this exciting new venue, and we hope to forge links with local schools and organisations to be able to greatly increase and diversify the artistic acitivities available to young people in the area, particularly in the areas of drama, dance and music.
Please come along and take a look at what the Studio can offer you and your children - we look forward to seeing you at The Studio very soon.
