You may be aware that Trust Thamesmead are currently in the process of building The Link Thamesmead, a £5.1million project in the heart of Thamesmead, located under the Southern Arches (the elevated roundabout) near Tavy Bridge.
This development will become a dedicated arena for activities for young people. One of these arches will be a purpose built, state-of-the-art Performing Arts Studio and performance space operating under the stewardship of Theatre Street Performing Arts Ltd, a not-for-profit social enterprise company, the development of Theatre Street School of Performing Arts that has operated in the area for the past ten years (we celebrated 10 years in November 2011!).
The expansion of what the School is able to provide to the young people of the area will involve changing from what it currently delivers as a community theatre & dance school - operating out of a village hall, a school, a church hall and the local gym centre - to running a thriving Arts Centre that aims to become the creative hub of the local community, ultimately to become synonymous with creative and performing arts in Thamesmead and the local area.
We are hoping that all our current students - 250+ of
them, including adults! - will join us in the move to The Link. Those who already attend in Thamesmead should note that the new venue is less than 3 miles away on the main road; our Stage School in Plumstead is only 2 miles away; our students who currently attend at Europa Gym Centre will find The Link less than 3.5 miles away. The new site is situated close to public transport links.
We anticipate that most of our current classes and students will move to The Link, and Plumstead Stage School. However, we intend to continue operating our Stage School and dance classes in Bexleyheath (Belmont School branch).
Once we are open at The Link Thamesmead, we will be running a Performing Arts Studio that ultimately will have classes every night, so we will be able to greatly build upon the classes we already deliver: ballet, street, tap, jazz and so on. The opportunities we will be able to provide our children, old and new, will be greatly increased by this exciting new venue, and we hope to forge links with local schools and organisations to be able to greatly increase and diversify the artistic acitivities available to young people in the area, particularly in the areas of drama, dance and music.
We hope you will be joining us at the Performing Arts Studio @ The Link, Thamesmead in 2012. In the meantime, we will keep you informed of the progress as the year leading up to the move continues.
